Rachel has been playing basketball for over 16 years. She played AAU basketball for 9 straight years and won 3 Rhode Island State Championships and 2 Massachusetts State Championships during her career.
During her High School career, Rachel was a four year varsity basketball player for Cranston West High School. She won many awards in her senior year including All State selection, Academic All State and received a nomination as a McDonalds All American.
Following her career at Cranston West, Rachel received a full Division 2 Scholarship to play the guard position at Mercy College. In her freshman year, Rachel received Rookie of the Week honors. Rachel transferred to Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. to resume her basketball career. During the 2011-2012 seasons, her team won the Landmark Conference Championship and the school's first ever automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Coach Russ Ferri brings 16 years of coaching experience to the Thunder, having coached in town recreation, travel, and AAU basketball programs. His AAU coaching experience includes 5 years with the RI Breakers. (1998 - 2002)
Founded the Rhode Island Thunder in 2003
Team accomplishments include: Final Four appearance USJN 2003, Final Four Gym Rat Challenge 2004, Rhode Island State Champions 2003, 2004, 2005, Final four Mass State Championship 2011. Elite Eight Mass State Championship 2012. Built an Alumni of 15 players who have played or are currently playing college basketball. Over 300 AAU victories
Coach Ferri has built his entire system around the principle of "Teamwork" and he builds his teams by enforcing the fundamentals of basketball. His goals remain the same each and every year to compete with the best, look for individual and team improvement and ultimately prepare each and every player for their next step whether it's middle school, high school or college basketball.
Rachel is currently an Assistant Coach at Rhode Island College where she shares her commitment and expertise of basketball with the Women�s team in the NCAA Division III Little East Conference. Rachel takes pride in her work and her desire to see players excel at all levels of basketball.
During her time in the off season as Founder of Hoop Dreams Academy, Rachel spends quality time providing customized one on one basketball training and skill development to those girls and boys who are looking to improve their basketball knowledge and skills.
As an original Rhode Island Thunder basketball player and now an Assistant Coach in the organization, Rachel adds a special dimension to the Coaching Staff. .
